Turquoise – a turquoise between blue and green

Turquoise is a bottled acrylic paint of the dense Artistic Dense line. The thinner is water or an acrylic thinner. The shade lies exactly on the border of blue and green — it is a cool but at the same time luminous tone that behaves differently on a figure from a pure blue: it draws attention even over a small area.

Where the shade belongs

Turquoise is used where a color is to be visible but not garish. It serves on cloth accessories, scarves, belts and embroidery, on fantasy clothing and wizardly effects, on colored glass and stones, and in thinned form also as a glaze for suggesting verdigris on bronze or copper. It is strongest exactly in a glaze: drawn over a brown-green base it gives the metal that slightly deep cast that a green pigment on its own cannot manage. Mixing with white shifts the shade toward an icy position, while a drop of yellow, on the contrary, draws it toward green.

How to work with it

• The depth holds best over a lighter base; over a dark one the turquoise calms down and is subdued.
• For transitions reach for a wet palette, or for a retarder — luminous shades are hard to blend when one stroke dries before the next.
• For verdigris, thin the paint markedly and apply it only into the recesses, not over the whole area.
• It mixes smoothly with blue and green, so a whole range is easily built from it.
