Six cool shades for British carrier aircraft and the machines of Coastal Command, from sea gray to white.

Camouflage over the Atlantic was done differently than over land. British naval aviation and Coastal Command both reached for a cool palette: a slate gray-green and a very dark sea gray tone on the upper surfaces, completed by a light shade underneath. The six bottles cover that logic completely, from the typical naval pattern to the light finishes of patrol machines.
White to the FS 17875 standard and a light gray belong to the aircraft that hunted submarines. Trials showed that a dark machine is seen against the sky before the crew of a submarine can react, and so the undersides and the flanks were lightened. Black completes night versions and the areas where glare was expected.
The package also includes the traditional light undersurface tone. The set will therefore serve the Short Sunderland, the Consolidated Catalina and the Bristol Beaufighter as well as the carrier-borne Fairey Swordfish, Fulmar, Barracuda and Seafire from the carriers of the Home Fleet.
The material is a water-thinnable acrylic. The gray tones tend to run together into a single area when laid on heavily, so it pays to suggest the pattern faintly first and only then build the saturation up gradually until the boundaries gain the right contrast.
The light undersurface tone and the light gray look quite similar in the bottle, yet they behave differently on the model: the first has a hint of green, the second is coolly neutral. Mixing them up means shifting a finished model by several years and by one service, so lay both on a test surface beforehand and compare them side by side in daylight, not under the artificial lighting of a workshop.
