A set of Gundam Marker EX pens in a silver and a gold shade with a plated effect. The metallic sheen is applied straight from the tip, with no airbrush.

This set from the Gundam Marker EX line brings together a silver and a gold shade in the version the manufacturer calls plated, that is, with the effect of metal plating. The pigment is exceptionally fine and lays down in a continuous smooth coat, so the result does not read as an ordinary silver or gold paint with visible grain but as gleaming metal. That is also why it behaves differently from an ordinary marker, and a few rules are worth keeping.
The base is what decides. Metallic pigment follows whatever it lies on: on a rough or matte surface it stays a dull gray, on a smooth glossy surface it lights up. Smooth the area beforehand, remove dust and degrease it. Draw the strokes smoothly and in one direction, do not go back into an area that is drying, and rather apply a second coat later than work over a wet one. Do not sand or wipe the surface once it is dry, as the metallic sheen dulls easily. A clear coat usually subdues the sheen, so if you are going to varnish the model, test the combination on scrap plastic first.
For modelers who want a metallic look quickly and without spraying. The markers are supplied on their own; the kit, paints and clear coat are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
