A printed replacement exhaust nozzle for a model of the F-35A in 1:72 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F-35A Lightning II is a single-engine multirole combat aircraft built with reduced observability in mind. The A version is intended for conventional takeoff and landing from a runway. Its exhaust nozzle is complex in shape, made up of overlapping petals, and on a model it is visible from behind as well as from the side, so a simplified plastic part stands out. The tail is moreover the place that most often ends up in shot when a finished model is photographed.
A replacement exhaust nozzle for a model of the F-35A in 1:72 scale, produced by 3D printing. The part is printed in one piece, so there is no gluing of halves and with it no lengthwise seam that would have to be filled and sanded on a round surface. The division of the petals and their edges are therefore the same all the way round.
Printed parts carry small print supports. Cut them off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder off carefully with fine abrasive paper. The part is not polystyrene and is bonded with super glue. Wash and degrease it before painting, so that no print resin residue is left on the surface. A dark metallic base complemented by a hint of heat discoloration toward the rim of the nozzle works well.
The set suits modelers who are building the F-35A in 1:72 scale and want the tail to bear a close look. The replacement concerns a single place on the model, so it complicates the build in no way. The model, paints and glue are not included in the box, unless stated otherwise.
