Coarse grain is the one grade of the whole turf range that creates volume on a model. Fine foliage covers an area like a carpet and behaves like paint, whereas coarse grains cast shadows of their own, which is why they are used to build whatever should stand out above the terrain: low bushes, tufts of weeds or leaves on tree crowns. The yellow fall tone need not be used as the main color, though. It often does the most work as an admixture that brings the first hint of approaching fall into uniform green.
The jar takes 945 cm³, which the manufacturer states as 57.7 cubic inches. The lid has a sieve, so the foliage can be sprinkled straight from the container and there is no need to decant it into a dish. Nine further items of the same coarseness offer the same packaging in other colors, which makes it easier to mix your own blends and keep the same ratio across a whole scene.
It pays to keep the order of work: first the base, then the binder, only then the foliage, and never the other way round. The excess is tapped off once dry and returned to the jar, so nothing is lost. Anyone mixing their own shade should note the ratio down, because hitting the same tone a second time is usually harder than creating it the first.
