Fallen leaves are one of the few elements that name the season and the type of terrain at once. While grass works almost anywhere, leaves say straight away: this is a forest, this is autumn, this is the ground under trees. The AK Basing Bits range is built for dressing bases and small areas quickly, so a modeler does not have to make leaves with a punch out of colored paper, which is a whole evening's work if more than a handful are needed.
Natural leaf litter never lies evenly. Leaves gather in hollows, at roots, along obstacles and on the lee side of stones, while on rises and in ruts there are almost none. Work in layers, therefore: a first thin layer is scattered over the whole area, a second is poured deliberately into the hollows alone. It is fixed with white glue thinned with water and a drop of dish soap, applied from above with a dropper, as brushing the glue on directly shifts the leaves and sweeps them into a heap. Leave a few leaves lying loose on an edge or glued by one edge only, so that they lift off the ground; a flat carpet looks like wallpaper.
The most common mistake is a uniform color. Real leaf litter has several layers of age: the topmost leaves are the lightest and the most saturated, the deeper layers are dark, grayed and broken down. Divide the material into two or three heaps, tone each one lightly in a different shade and only then layer them on top of each other. A final very thin brown wash ties everything together and sinks the leaves into the ground. A matte varnish at the end knocks back any unnatural sheen.
The material is supplied for further work. Glue, paints and bases are not included in the package.
