A green grass mat in a small roll

Unrolling a finished mat is the quickest way to get a green area under a model that does not look like felt cloth. The surface is spread flock anchored on a vinyl backing, so the grass layer does not shed even after years of handling. The material does not fade and does not let the color go, which with large areas decides: an area faded unevenly cannot be put right in any way other than by replacing it.

The size of the roll

The small roll measures 63.5 x 83.8 cm, in the original measure 25 by 33 inches. The backing is springy and resistant to tearing, and after use it can be rolled up again and stored. Larger formats exist within the same code line as well, so the choice can be made by the area you need to cover, and a smaller roll will serve as a complement to them.

Work on the finished surface

• The mat is cut with ordinary scissors to any plan.
• You create a road or a sheet of water by scraping the flock off down to the backing.
• The scraped place is then worked like ordinary terrain, including painting.
• Trees, bushes and small buildings can be seated straight onto the finished surface.

It can be used in two ways: either glued permanently onto a board, or left laid loose and rolled up again after an exhibition. The second version suits everybody who photographs models or takes them to meetings and does not want to haul a solid base about. It is a good idea to blur the transition between the mat and the terrain around by spreading flock along the edge, so that no sharp visible edge arises.
