This is a set of finished, hand-painted figures of cattle in HO scale. The animals are not a kit and not an unpainted casting; they are supplied in a color finish matching the Hereford breed, that is with a red-brown body and a white head. On a model railroad layout they serve to settle pastures, the paddocks by a farm and the open patches between the track and the woods, which would otherwise look empty.
The best effect comes from placing them in an irregular group in which some of the animals stand and some graze with their heads down. Do not build the herd at regular spacing and leave a couple of head closer to the fence, because natural placement does more for the credibility of a scene than the number of figures. A pasture looks better with worn paths to the water trough, which are suggested with lighter static grass or with fine dust.
The animals are glued down with a drop of PVA glue straight into the grass, and it is good to sink the legs in slightly, so that a figure does not look as if it were standing on top of the grass. The shade can be fine-tuned with a brush as needed and a full repaint is not necessary. Once they are set in place a light matte varnish against rubbing and gloss is worth adding. Fine dust from the pasture applied with a dry brush blends the animals perfectly with the surrounding terrain.
The figures are supplied finished and hand-painted. This is not a kit, and a layout, scenery and glue are not included in the package.
