Intermediate Blue is a medium blue with a grayish cast, carried in the Federal Standard 595 chart under the number 35164. The leading three marks the matte group of the chart, and the five in second place the blue family of shades. The word intermediate in the name describes where the shade sits: between the dark blue of the upper surfaces and the light tone of the undersides.
Blue-gray tones belong to naval aviation, where color schemes were built from steps of one color according to where an observer looks at the machine from. In such a scheme a medium blue usually covers the sides of the fuselage and the transition areas. It also serves on its own wherever you need a muted blue without brilliance. Beside lighter gray-blue tones it holds the contrast without making the scheme look hard.
Wash and degrease the model, then stir the paint thoroughly. Graded schemes are sprayed area by area from the top down, and the transitions between the individual blues are blurred soft with thinned paint at lower pressure. Do not rush; every coat should be thin, and let it set up briefly between coats. Thin with a thinner intended for this range of paints; the ratio and further instructions come from the manufacturer.
For modelers of naval aircraft and everyone who builds multi-step blue schemes by standard numbers. The package contains one bottle of paint of 17 ml; a thinner and other accessories are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
