About product

Large Surface Sanding Stick - a sanding stick for large areas (AMMO of Mig Jimenez)

Large Surface Sanding Stick is a modeling tool, not a kit. It comes as one piece and carries three different grits: 320, 600 and 4000. Each abrasive area is distinguished by color, so you can tell at a glance which side you are holding. The material is springy and adapts even to rounded shapes; the coarser grits cope not only with plastic but also with resin, metal and wood. The finest side, with a grit of 4000, serves for polishing and suits cleaning up clear parts as well as work on an already painted surface.

The key here is the width of the abrasive area. A wide tool spreads the pressure, so it sands evenly and does not create hollows; a narrow stick or a file easily digs in on a large area and leaves ripples which then show mercilessly under gloss varnish. That is why this stick is the first choice for long fuselage seams, wings, vehicle bodies and large panels. With grit numbers a simple rule applies: a lower number means a coarser abrasive, a higher number a finer one. You always work from coarser to finer and never the other way round, because a fine grit will no longer smooth out the scratches left by a coarse one, it will only polish them, and they will then stay visible in the paint.

Use

  • Leveling long glued seams on a fuselage, wings, a body or the side of a vehicle.
  • Sanding putty level with no dips or ripples.
  • Working through the grits: 320 to remove material, 600 to smooth it down, 4000 for the final polish.
  • Polishing clear parts (canopies, lights) and gentle work on a painted surface.
  • Wet sanding: moisten the stick and the part, because less dust is created, the abrasive clogs less and the surface comes out smoother.

Who it is for

For modelers who build larger models and need to get large areas genuinely level: aircraft with a seam running the whole length of the fuselage, vehicles, ships and larger figure bases. A beginner learning to get rid of seams will appreciate it, as will an experienced builder who wants to prepare a surface for gloss varnish. Rinse the stick after work and let it dry, because it is meant for repeated use.

Sanding creates a fine dust, which you should not inhale. Work in a ventilated space, protect your airways and, if the surface allows it, sand wet.

FAQ

A narrow tool concentrates the pressure into a small area and easily sands a hollow into soft plastic. The result is a rippled surface which shows up as soon as gloss varnish goes on. A wide abrasive area spreads the pressure and the surface stays level.

From coarser to finer, that is 320, then 600, then 4000. A lower number means a coarser abrasive. Going back is pointless: a fine grit will not smooth out the scratches left by a coarse one, it will only polish them, and they will then show in the paint.

Wet sanding is generally an advantage in modeling: it holds the dust down, the abrasive clogs less and the surface comes out smoother. We recommend only moistening it (not soaking) and rinsing the stick after work and letting it dry freely.

No. It is a modeling tool, a sanding stick. It contains no model parts.
