Leather FS33275 in a desert palette

Leather lies exactly between tan and brown, and that is just where it is most needed in the camouflage of ground vehicles. Desert and semi-desert schemes rarely rest on a single shade. Mostly they involve two or three fields whose tones are close to each other, and the hardest thing about them is making the transition so that the fields stay distinguishable and yet do not fight. A shade from the middle of the palette is ideal for that, because it ties the neighboring fields together. The name gives the number of the American Federal Standard color standard, FS33275, and the matte degree of sheen.

Tips for working on a scheme

• Use it as the middle field of a three-color desert scheme and let it reach lightly into both of its neighbors.
• Create a soft edge with a mask lifted above the surface, or with strips of modeling putty laid loosely on the area.
• On dusty areas you will do yourself a favor by laying it outside the fields as well, as a suggestion of settled dust.
• It also comes into its own on leather equipment, pouches, straps and seats, where it completes the look of the crew.
