A light gray is the classic color of lower surfaces. Its job was practical: an aircraft seen from below against the sky was meant to blend in, while darker camouflage covered it from above. On a model that gives rise to the most conspicuous element of the whole scheme, namely the dividing line between the dark upper and the light lower surface. It runs along the sides of the fuselage, wraps around the engine cowlings and breaks at the leading edges of the wing and the stabilizer. On a finished model the eye always catches on it first.
From the point of view of laying paint on, a light gray is rewarding and treacherous at once. The extensive lower surface of a wing has almost no breaks in it, so shadow does not come into play there and the area can look flat and uninteresting. This is exactly where it helps to suggest differences between panels or to set the control surfaces apart slightly, because a light base reliably shows up any such work. On many aircraft the national insignia on the lower surface of the wing are larger than on the upper surfaces, and on a light gray they come out in full.
