Light-emitting diodes that give out light in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum. A package diameter of 5 mm is a common size among diodes, so they can be hidden even in smaller holes in a model. Neither the number of pieces in the package nor the length of the leads is stated here; check them against the figures on the box.
Ultraviolet lighting is used in modeling differently from ordinary white or colored diodes. It does not light a scene as such but makes fluorescent paints, pigments and materials that respond to it glow. That allows work with science fiction and fantasy subjects, with a glowing sign, with a luminous liquid in a tank, or with the effect of a backlit base. It looks good when the light source is hidden inside the model and only the area it lights is visible.
The diodes are connected to direct current and have a set polarity, so with the connection reversed they do not light. Find out the supply voltage, the need for a series resistor and whether the leads are already fitted from the manufacturer's data. Do not look directly into a lit diode from close up. Always try the wiring out in the model before you cover it in and glue it, because later access tends to be difficult.
