A light box for photographing finished models and figures, in the larger XL version. An enclosed space with diffused light and a single-color background.

A model that looks splendid in a display case is often a disappointment in a photograph. The reasons are harsh light from one direction, reflections and clutter in the background. A light box solves those three things at once: it encloses the scene in a single-color space, diffuses the light so that the shadows soften, and screens off the surroundings. The result is a picture in which the shading and the surface finish are visible, which is exactly what took the most work on the model.
The XL designation belongs to the larger version. It will be appreciated by anyone who photographs larger scales, longer vehicles or whole dioramas that do not fit into smaller boxes. A simple rule applies: the model should have room around it, so that the background behind it blurs and the corners of the space are not visible.
Rest the camera or the phone against something or put it on a tripod and use a delayed release, so that the shot does not blur. Switch the other lights in the room off; when the light of the box mixes with another, the colors of the model drift into an unnatural shade. Photograph the model slightly from above and at eye level, not straight down, and take several shots from different angles. A white background suits most models, but with light schemes try a darker one, so that the model does not blend into it.
The model, the camera and a tripod are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
