LP-18 Dull Red

The color

LP-18 Dull Red is a red shade from Tamiya's LP modeling range. The adjective in the name hints that this is not a glaring signal red but a muted one, which looks more convincing on a model than a pure saturated tone. It is exactly that kind of shade that tends to be needed for markings, warning areas, small pieces of equipment and places where the red should be visible but must not pull attention away from the whole model.

How to work with the paint

Shake the jar thoroughly before use, as the pigment settles at the bottom. Use the thinner the manufacturer specifies for the LP range and keep to the thinning ratio given on the packaging; do not carry habits over from other ranges and do not experiment with them on a finished model. Lay on several light coats rather than one thick one. Red shades generally have weaker covering power, so it pays to even the surface out with a light undercoat, or the paint will come out unevenly on a dark surface and will have to be built up in layers.

What to watch out for

Work in a well ventilated area and with respiratory protection, which goes double for spraying. Mask the neighboring areas in advance, because a saturated pigment is hard to remove from a light coat around it. Let the paint dry through properly before masking, or the tape will pull the coat away with it. Close the jar carefully after work and wipe the rim, so that the lid does not dry shut for next time.
