Light gray crushed stone in a fine grade, 945 cubic centimeters in a shaker with a sieve in the lid. It matches freshly topped-up track ballast and newly shaped surfaces.
Responsibility details are not available.
After the ballast has been cleaned or topped up, a stretch of line is lighter at first glance than everything around it. The stone is free of silt, the edges of the grains are sharp and they reflect the light. Over a few seasons that changes: the surface turns gray, darkens and merges with its surroundings. The light gray shade from this shaker aims precisely at that first state, that is at a stretch with a recent repair behind it.
It is exactly that difference that a story can be made from. When the main line gets light ballast and the branch track beside it stays dark and overgrown, the viewer grasps at once which of them matters and which is used once a month. The transition between the two stretches should not be sharp; it looks best when the two grades are mixed for a few tens of centimeters before the end and the boundary is blurred. The same trick works at a transfer yard too, where a packed surface gradually turns into an unkept edge.
The finest of the grades offered suits places where larger stone would look like boulders. Besides track ballast in the smaller scales it can be used as gravel spread on roads, as fill for containers on a construction site or as a top layer that fills the gaps between coarser grains. When filling containers and piles it proves itself to pour the material onto paper folded into a chute and to lead it from there to its destination; it runs out of the sieve faster than one expects, and the excess is then collected from the whole table. The material is supplied on its own, and no glue or anything else is packed with it.
