What sets this assortment apart from ordinary color sets is the three varnishes. The gloss one is used as a base under decals, so that no silvery veil settles under their carrier film; the matte one is laid on at the end and brings the whole model into one look; and the satin one stands between them for surfaces that are to have a fine sheen, such as the leather of equipment or varnished wood. Beside them stand a gloss white and a gloss black, that is shades meant for areas where the surface is to reflect light, and an opaque white suited as a base under light colors.
It pays to keep to the order of work. Onto the colored base comes the gloss layer first, onto it the decals, then any shading and only at the very end the matte or satin varnish, according to how the finished model is to look. Anyone who turns this sequence around usually finds that the decal could not be settled on the matte surface without a visible edge, and putting that right is then hard. So let every layer dry through properly, because haste does not pay in this sequence of steps and takes its revenge precisely on the final layer.
