Wetland dark — Model Scene

Wetland growths consist of tall grasses, sedges and reeds growing in dense clumps on waterlogged ground. This version is the darkest in the graded range and is supplied as finished growth — it is only laid down and glued, with nothing to assemble and nothing to paint. The manufacturer is the Czech brand Model Scene, which specializes in diorama vegetation.

Where the dark shade belongs

In nature you find dark tones where there is the most moisture and the least light: in the shade of bushes and trees, by deeper water, on north-facing banks and in dense impenetrable reeds. In a model the dark version has one more role — it helps create depth. When you place darker growth in the foreground and lighter growth in the background, a scene recedes visually and reads as spatial. An evenly dark area across a whole wetland would look flat and heavy instead, so dose the dark shade deliberately.

Usage tips

• Use the dark growth in places with the most moisture and the least light.
• Combine with the medium and light versions — the dark tone on its own weighs a scene down.
• Plant the clumps irregularly, with varying density and gaps.
• Fill the transitions to the land with a muddy scatter and fine scatter.
• A glossy muddy surface at the foot of the growth suggests that it really is a wetland.
