About product

Mr.Paint Burnt Metal Violet — acrylic metallic paint of the Aqua line

Burnt Metal Violet is a modeling paint, not a kit. It belongs to the Aqua line from Mr.Paint, which is a water-thinnable acrylic — that is different chemistry from the famous lacquer line of the same manufacturer. It comes in a dropper bottle with a volume of 17 ml, is applied with an airbrush and a brush and thinned with water or the manufacturer's thinner. It has a low odor and once dry it leaves a semi-gloss surface onto which decals, washes and filters can be laid straight away.

The shade imitates burnt, heat-tinted metal in a violet tone. When steel is heated, a thin temper layer forms on the surface that passes, according to the temperature, from straw through violet and blue to gray. It is exactly this phenomenon that modelers imitate on nozzles, exhausts, collectors and barrels.

Use

  • Always mix a metallic thoroughly. The metal pigment settles at the bottom — without shaking you mostly apply binder and the metallic effect never arrives.
  • Prepare a smooth base. A metallic hides nothing and will instead emphasize every scratch. It looks best over a smoothed, ideally dark glossy base.
  • Spray in thin, translucent coats — a heavy coat rather smothers the effect.
  • Put it at the end. Metallics are harder to spray over and to mask.
  • Do not cover it with a matte clear coat. A matte clear coat scatters the reflection of the metal particles and practically kills the metallic look.

Only a combination of shades makes a realistic nozzle

A real nozzle or exhaust is never a single color. Mr.Paint also offers the shade Burnt Metal Blue in the same line and modelers commonly layer them over each other — fine translucent transitions from violet to blue and toward gray give the smooth rainbow temper a single paint from a bottle can never deliver.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of aircraft (nozzles, exhausts), military vehicles (exhausts, mufflers) and motorcycles and cars (collectors, tailpipes) — and for anyone who wants to handle heat tinting of metal without solvent lacquers and their acrid smell.

Keep the paint out of the reach of children, work in a ventilated room and use airway and eye protection while spraying. This is a stand-alone product — models, glue and thinner are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is a water-thinnable acrylic from the Aqua line. Mr.Paint is famous for its lacquer line that sprays without thinning, but the Aqua line is different chemistry — it is thinned with water or the manufacturer's thinner and has no acrid smell. An unthinned bottle from the lacquer line and this paint are not the same thing.

The manufacturer states it for the brush and the airbrush. With metallics, though, the smoothest and most realistic surface comes from an airbrush in thin coats; with a brush work rather on small areas and details and apply several light coats instead of one heavy one.

It is not. Heat-tinted metal has a smooth transition of several colors. So combine the violet with the other burnt shades — Mr.Paint offers Burnt Metal Blue in the same line — and lay them over each other in fine translucent coats.

We do not recommend it. A matte clear coat over a metallic kills the metal effect — it scatters the reflection of the metal particles and turns shiny metal into a gray surface. If you need to unify the surface, handle it through the order of work and apply the metallic last.
