RLM 74 Graugrün is the dark gray-green of the upper surfaces of German aircraft. The water-thinnable Aqua range, pre-thinned for an airbrush.
Responsibility details are not available.
The German name Graugrün means gray-green, but in reality the shade reads as a very dark gray with a barely perceptible green undertone. From 1941 it formed, together with a lighter gray, the pair of colors on the upper surfaces of day fighters. It was worn by Messerschmitts of the F and G series, by Focke-Wulfs and by the heavy twin-engine types.
The paint is water-thinnable and comes pre-thinned for an airbrush, so it is poured straight into the cup. A dry coat will take masking tape and washes applied afterwards.
On a model the shade reads darker than on a color reference fan, because a small area optically increases saturation. In smaller scales it therefore pays to lift the tone a fraction.
Water-thinnable ranges have one advantage over lacquers: they can be worked with without thorough extraction. The price is a somewhat lower durability of the dry film, so peel masking tape off slowly and at a shallow angle.
