Three shades for the standard European camouflage of ground vehicles - the green, brown and black pattern used from the 1980s across the armies of the North Atlantic alliance.
Responsibility details are not available.
When the allied armies were looking for a common camouflage pattern for central Europe in the 1980s, they settled on a combination of flat green, dark brown and black in fairly large irregular fields. The pattern was meant to work in woodland, in fields and in towns, and above all it was meant to be the same across armies, so that the equipment of one country would not stand out beside that of its neighbor. The result holds to this day, and a modeler meets it on tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, artillery and ordinary trucks.
A military finish of this generation was no longer just a color. It took account of how the surface reflects infrared radiation, so that a machine would not glow in night vision devices, and that is why it looks extremely flat, almost velvety. The fields of the pattern were moreover drawn to exact templates, although units in practice simplified the shapes a good deal, and the transitions between colors tend to be sharp rather than sprayed.
The cleanest route is masking compound or thin tape, with which you keep the crisp edges typical of a factory finish. A free hand suits places where a vehicle was repainted by a unit in the field. A very flat surface is prone to fingerprints, so once it has dried it is better to hold the model by the chassis. Before applying decals and washes, use an intermediate gloss clear coat, otherwise the flat layer will absorb the printing and the edges will whiten. What remains is to add dust in the shade of the local soil, and the machine immediately stops looking as if it had just been collected from a repair shop.
