Three paper birches 7, 5.7 and 3.8 cm tall. White bark makes these trees an unmissable feature by water and in a garden.

The birch is among the easiest trees of all to recognize. Its bark is almost white and peels away in thin strips, which is what gave the tree its name. In the landscape it grows by lakes, along rivers and ponds, but just as often you will find it as an ornamental specimen on tended ground, where it is planted precisely for the contrast of the pale trunk against dark green.
The three trees differ in size: the tallest is 7 cm, the middle one 5.7 cm and the smallest 3.8 cm. All of them are finished and need no building, so they can be arranged straight away. Three graded heights allow a little group to be founded of the kind that arises in nature from natural regrowth around an older tree.
They stand out best at the surface of water, where the white trunks are reflected, or on a grassy area with no other growth to let them show. In a woodland group it is better to put birches at the edge, because in the middle of dense growth their main merit is lost. In garden scenes it works well to plant them in a pair or a trio close together, as that matches the way a birch grows.
The spread of sizes suits buildings in HO and N, with the smallest piece serving as a young tree or as a tree in the second plane. When seating them it is good to turn the trunks slightly apart, because a birch grows in a fan and perfectly upright trunks side by side look contrived.
Around the foot of the trunks, fine pale grass and a few stones suit the spot, breaking up the flat surface of the base. The white bark then gets a darker background, and the difference between tree and terrain shows even in a photograph taken close up.
