Black pigment gel is a thick weathering product for soot and burnt effects: around exhausts, gun muzzles, smoke-blackened surfaces and greasy corners.

Black pigment gel is a weathering product meant for the darkest part of the dirtying palette: soot, smoke trails and burnt surfaces. The pigment is mixed into a thick base, so it is applied as a paste, stays where it is put and, once dry, leaves a flat surface with no sheen. It is not an opaque paint for large areas but a targeted effect, applied locally and blended away to nothing.
Black is the strongest shade in the whole weathering palette, so use it sparingly. Put a small amount on the brush, take the excess off onto paper and only then work on the model: you can always add more, but taking it away is difficult. A more convincing result comes from combining it with brown and gray tones, because a purely black trail looks flat and artificial. Draw the effect in the direction of the airflow, that is, back from its source, and always blend the edges. Work in thin layers and close the container carefully after use, so that the gel does not dry out.
It suits builders of military vehicles, aircraft, ships and railway models who want realistic traces of service without mixing their own compounds. It also comes into its own on dioramas and display bases, where a fire pit, a burnt-out area or smoke-blackened masonry has to be suggested.
