A styrene rod with a square section of 0.75 x 0.75 mm and a length of 35 cm. The square section holds its shape even over a larger span, which is why it suits stiffeners, the frames of buildings and truss structures.

A profile with a square section three quarters of a millimeter on a side, or in inches thirty thousandths on both sides. The standard length of a piece is 35 cm and the material is white opaque polystyrene. Compared with a flat strip, the square shape has one fundamental advantage: it stays straight even over a longer span and does not twist, which is decisive when building a frame.
A rod of this size is a classic stiffener. Glued into the corner of a hollow superstructure or behind the inner side of a thin part it prevents sinking and bowing. From several pieces you can assemble the frame of a building, a railing frame, a ladder or the lattice girder of a crane. On a diorama it serves as the beams of scaffolding, railroad ties under track or fence posts. Modelers also build simple jigs from it that hold parts at a right angle until the cement cures, and that can simply be snapped off after use.
Make the cut with a knife against a hard board, and for right angles help yourself with a metal square. Sand the ends on fine paper so that the joints seat fully and the frame is not left crooked. When gluing, apply the solvent product with a brush onto the mating surface and press the parts together for a few seconds; once cured the joint will take the strain of further sanding. If you are building a structure from a larger number of pieces, work on graph paper laid over glass, as that keeps the whole thing flat. Free the finished frame of fingerprints with a degreaser before painting, otherwise the paint will not adhere in places.
