A white opaque polystyrene strip with a cross section of one by two and a half millimeters and a length of 35 centimeters. It is a medium size that already has enough stiffness to carry a structure while still being comfortable to cut with a knife. The material matches the plastic of kits, so it glues with ordinary cement for plastic and blends in with its surroundings once painted.
Make the cut square and level the end with a sanding pad, or a gap will appear in the corner. When building a frame, draw the outline on a base and glue the elements straight onto it; the result then stays square. If the strip is to become wood, draw a stiff wire brush or the tip of a scriber along its length, and a texture appears that cannot be told from a plank once painted.
A longer molding running the whole length of a model almost never fits at the first attempt. Offer it up dry, mark the points of contact with a pencil and only then glue from one end to the other, so that the deviation does not accumulate all the way to the end.
When cutting, work with a sharp knife on a cutting mat and do not inhale the sanding dust.
