An Almost Square Bar 2.0 x 2.5 mm

A nearly square section gives the material a property that flat strips do not have: it holds its shape without support and does not twist. It yields roof beams, fence posts, the window frames of a warehouse, the legs of tables and benches, square scaffold braces or the side rails of a cart. The half-millimeter difference between the sides can be put to clever use as well, since turning the profile a quarter turn gives you a slightly different dimension.

Dimensions and quantity

The sides of the section measure two and two and a half millimeters, the rod is 35 centimeters long and is supplied on its own. A standard length yields a whole row of fence posts with some margin for mistakes.

Building Recommendations

So that all the posts stand at the same height, cut them with a small allowance and level them together on a sanding board at the very end. Cracks in the wood can be suggested with a fine saw run along the edge, and knots by pricking with a heated point. When gluing into a corner it is a good idea to check with an engineer's square first whether the part really stands perpendicular, because once the cement has set it will not move.

Note

The two sides differ only slightly, so mark the orientation on the offcuts to keep the pieces from getting mixed up. Store the shorter remnants separately; they will come in useful later for braces and wedges under uneven terrain.

Estimated consumption

A fence around a smaller scene usually takes up several tens of centimeters, the roof structure of a shelter considerably less. Allow a margin about a fifth higher for the botched cuts that simply happen in handwork. It is better to take the spare length along with the rest than at the last moment, because shades of white can differ slightly between production batches.
