A sturdy square tube with a side over six millimeters can already take the role of the main girder of a whole scene. From it you can build the gantry of a loading ramp, the vertical columns of a shelter, the protective frames of construction machinery, the structure of an advertising sign over an entrance or the frame of the body on a special vehicle. In the larger scales it can even make the backbone tube of the chassis of an off-road vehicle.
The outer edge of the square is 6.3 millimeters, one rod measures 35 centimeters and it is ordered on its own. Thanks to the greater wall area the profile takes noticeably more load than the smaller sizes in the same range and needs fewer internal braces.
A perpendicular cut is guaranteed by a simple jig made from a straight offcut of wood with a groove in it. Before gluing, get the grease from your fingers off the surfaces, a wipe with a cloth dampened in alcohol is enough, and the joint then holds far more reliably. If you want to create the impression of a weld, run a thin bead of filler or of dissolved offcut along the seam and pass over it lightly with a point once it has dried.
The tube pairs easily with thin sheets and strips of the same material, because they all react to the same glue and sand at the same rate.
With thicker sections it pays to lay the individual cuts out on paper in advance. With a well-thought-out layout a thirty-five centimeter rod yields considerably more parts than taking them at random from one end. Keep offcuts longer than two centimeters, as they serve as braces and spacer blocks.
