A radius of one and a half millimeters is the middle size in the grading of quarter rounds, and it differs from its thinner siblings in that it really can be seen on a model. Whereas the finest strips serve so that nobody notices them, this one is used where the rounding is meant to be a prominent element of the shape.
It does most of its work away from vehicles. The corner trim of a masonry building, the edging of a concrete base, the trim of a staircase or the rounded edge of a station platform look finished with it, and above all straight, which rarely comes off with hand-cut strips from a sheet. Stood upright it serves as the post of a shed gate or as a vertical stiffener in the corner of a crate.
The white plastic can be snapped once scored, the ends are trued with a file and the joint is made with a solvent that softens both parts where they meet. It holds paint without a primer, yet it is worth degreasing the surface first. The strip measures 35 cm, so one piece yields perimeter trim even around a larger object without having to be extended, and the remainder stays in reserve for repairs. Anyone building a scene from several buildings will appreciate that the profile has the same section along its whole length and that the joints between adjoining stretches do not show.
Anyone building from their own plans will manage with a few sizes of profile without a single photo-etched component. A rounded base under a monument, the edging of a flower bed by a house or trim along a gutter are tasks where patience and a sharp knife come in handier than an expensive set. The result can also be trimmed to a different length at any time.
