A beam profile 0.6x2.8 mm in polystyrene, one piece 35 cm long.

A section of 0.6x2.8 mm is one of the classic building sizes - reduced to 1:87 it is a ten-inch beam. It is used wherever a beam is meant to be visible but not massive: for joists and purlins, for scaffolding around a building under construction, for fences, for the formwork of bridge abutments and for the slatted floors of flatcars.
Each profile is 35 cm long and is offered singly.
For repeating elements such as scaffold rungs it pays to make a simple stop jig from an offcut of wood. The parts then come out exactly the same and the whole structure is not racked. To join them, it is enough to apply the cement to just one of the parts.
If you want to age the beams, run a coarser sandpaper along their edges so that they lose their factory sharpness, and mark a few lengthwise grooves on the face. Once the base coat is sprayed on, the irregularities will show up by themselves.
Keep the profiles lying flat, ideally in a tube or a long box. A bent beam remembers its shape and pulls the structure into a curve as you glue it. It is worth putting offcuts shorter than five centimeters aside, as they come in handy for braces and spacers.
Scaffolding or a roof truss uses a surprisingly large amount of material, so keep several profiles on hand. A part-built structure that waits a week to be completed gathers dust in the meantime and adheres less well. One spare profile saves interrupting work you have already started.
