An open shape with two legs and a web. Frames of truck chassis, the guide strips of gates and the edging of cargo beds are made from exactly this kind of section. The inside of the U also works as a channel in which a wire or a thinner profile can be hidden. Made of white polystyrene, rod length 35 cm, charged per piece.
Extruded styrene has a smooth, slightly glossy surface and in a photograph or under a lamp it gives away at once that this is plastic. It is not a matter of shade: even a perfectly mixed paint looks artificial on a glossy surface, because real steel at this scale reflects light diffusely, not in a sharp band.
The remedy has two settings. Either the gloss is taken off with a matte varnish applied in a thin coat over the finished paint, or the surface is roughened before painting with a fine abrasive paper of high grit. The first route is quicker, the second lasts longer and the paint holds on it noticeably better. Combining both is the safest.
Watch the order: the matte varnish is applied only after the glazes and washes, otherwise further thinned paint soaks into it and stays there as a stain that can no longer be pulled off.
For storage it is enough to protect the rod from bending and dust. A settled speck shows under a matte coat as a small bump whose removal takes more time than its size would suggest.
