An open profile 6.3 mm wide and 35 cm long resembles the side member of a truck frame, and that is exactly where it is used most. Converted into 1:35 scale the size works out at around 22 cm, and in 1:24 at 15 cm - values of the kind that real frame members of vehicles and trailers have. The material is white styrene, which can be drilled, sanded and, with gentle warming, bowed into the shape you need.
Besides chassis, it proves itself on semi-trailers, on the frames of trailers, on the guide track of a crane trolley or on the edging of a loading platform. A pair of profiles set facing one another and joined by crossmembers makes a ladder frame that will carry even a resin body with wheels. Short pieces serve as footings under a container or as props for a folding ramp, or as guide rails for the sliding gates of a hall.
Assemble the frame on a flat board and secure both side members with clamps until the joints set, otherwise the structure will twist and the wheels will not sit on the ground. Solvent cement melts the styrene, so the resulting joint is as strong as the material around it. Drill the holes for the axle pins before gluing - in a loose part the drill will not slip and the hole comes out exactly right. The inside of the profile can be filled with a thin sheet, which makes a closed girder of the kind that newer chassis have.
