The elongated format came about because of bases that are markedly longer in one direction than in the other. Under such a bottom a round disc does not hold evenly and the model rocks when touched. A rectangle follows the shape of the bottom and spreads the holding force along its whole length.
It is with this size that the pack holds the most pieces of the rectangular versions, so it is enough even for a larger formation of cavalry or for a set of small vehicles. The other rectangles in the same range have fewer pieces, because they take up a larger area of the starting material.
Line the longer side up with the longer side of the base and lay the magnet in the middle, so that the border stays the same all round. An off-center position shows up at once: the model turns to one side on the steel. Before gluing it is a good idea to hold the base against steel dry and check how it behaves when tilted.
For a square bottom the square version is the better fit, for rounded outlines the oval one. The thin magnetic material can be shortened with scissors, narrowed or have its corners rounded, but allow for the fact that the loss of area also reduces the holding force. The package does not contain models, bases or the steel counter-surface.
The elongated format has proved itself away from cavalry as well. It fits under the bases of pairs of infantry standing one behind the other, under gun carriages with a long trail and under trailers whose drawbar reaches beyond the outline of the bottom. In all these cases what matters is that the magnet lies under the center of gravity of the group, not in the middle of the geometric outline.
