This is an accessory for figures at the large 1:16 scale, not a model and not a whole figure. At 1:16 a helmet is large enough for the quality of the clean-up and the painting to show, so it is worth spending time on it: on a finished figure the headgear is the first thing a viewer sees. The accessory is used to replace a less successful original part or to convert a character to another army and period.
The M1 helmet was the standard American steel helmet from the Second World War until the 1980s, when a helmet in composite materials replaced it. It consisted of an outer steel shell and an inner liner with a webbing suspension; the liner could also be worn on its own as light headgear. The rounded shape of the shell with its slightly rolled rim and the chin strap, which was often worn undone or slung over the rim, are characteristic.
Free the part of casting remnants and flash, level the mating face and degrease the surface. Try the fit on the head of the figure dry and, if need be, sand the inside back slightly so that the helmet sits naturally and does not look too high. Bond it with cyanoacrylate glue and fill the seam with putty or a modeling compound. Apply a thin primer before painting. The finish on real helmets had a finely grainy, non-glossy surface, which at this scale can be suggested with a textured paint or a very fine dusting in the base. After the base olive color, a dark wash under the rim and around the strap and light chipping on the edges, where the paint wore first, will help.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a figure. Paints, glue, putty and the figure itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
