Rolling Pin DUTCH Bricks 15mm — a roller with a brickwork pattern

A brick wall is a rewarding thing on a diorama precisely because it repeats regularly — and that is exactly what modeling by hand cannot bear. The roller cuts that work down to a single pass: into rolled-out modeling compound it impresses narrow bricks laid in the regular bond familiar from European, and especially Dutch, buildings. The designation 15mm refers to the size of the pattern, that is to smaller bricks than in the basic version of the same motif.

From a sheet to a wall

• Roll the compound out to an even thickness and make the impression in one pass, while it is still well workable.
• Trim the sheet to the size of the wall with a sharp knife before it cures — once cured it can only be cut with a saw and the edges crumble.
• Join the corners of buildings on a miter or cover one wall with an overlap; a vertical joint in the middle of the bricks gives the join away most of all.
• Into the soft surface add lintels over the windows, missing bricks or a crack — broken regularity is what makes a building believable.
• Wash the roller after work, while the residue of compound is still soft.

Painting bricks

A brick surface is best painted from a dark base toward light: a base in the color of the mortar, then once dry light drybrushing or a thin glaze on the faces of the bricks, and finally individual bricks set apart with a shade of their own. The rest of the work is done by a wash that runs into the joints and draws the brickwork out.
