Rolling Pin Egyptian - a texture roller with Egyptian motifs

By pressing, the roller transfers continuous decoration in an Egyptian spirit into soft modeling compound. It comes in useful on wall facing, plinths, paving and themed figure bases. In itself it is not a consumable; it is a tool you buy once and use again and again, while the compound from which the final part is made is obtained separately.

Working with the roller

• Roll the compound out on a smooth surface; uneven thickness shows on the impression at once.
• Treat both the roller and the surface underneath with water or a release agent before the pass.
• Press in one pass, smoothly and without stopping; backing up makes the decoration run together.
• While it is soft, trim the area to the size of the part and let the compound cure fully according to its maker's instructions.
• A cured surface can be sanded, drilled and glued like any ordinary modeling material.

Painting and dusting

Egyptian motifs come out best on a warm sand-colored base. Spray a light stone base, bring out the hollowed lines with a dark wash and lighten the edges with a dry brush. It is dust that gives it character: a fine light pigment applied into the recesses and at the foot of the surface creates the impression of dry, wind-scoured stone. If you want colored decoration, keep the pigments in the recesses only and apply the color accents with a brush on the raised areas.
