A circle 55 mm in diameter is among the larger base sizes. It is found under a gun crew, under a rider and under a single dominant figure for which a smaller disc is not enough. The pack carries thirteen discs, so one purchase fits out a whole group of models and you need not come back to this size.
A model held magnetically stays on the steel insert of a transport case and does not tip over on the way to a competition. The same property is useful in a display case with a steel shelf, where a formation stays exactly in the arrangement you set it in. Anyone preparing several scenes will appreciate that a figure moves from one plate to another in a second and without glue.
The disc is placed into the recess in the bottom of the base, or glued flat underneath. Clean the mating surface of dust and paint residue; smooth plastic is worth roughening with fine abrasive paper, as the joint then holds considerably better. Allow for the fact that the layer of material lifts the model above the plane of the table by its own thickness.
A magnetic field does not belong near payment cards, mechanical watches or older data media. Obtain the steel counterpart or a second magnet separately; it is not part of the delivery. Bases, figures and glue are likewise bought separately.
The round outline has one more practical advantage: the model can be turned on steel to any angle and stays held just as firmly. When photographing a finished figure you therefore turn the lighting, not the tripod.
