The title of the book means, in translation, aircraft of the Second World War. Those six years of war are the period of fastest change in the history of aviation: at the outset biplanes and machines of mixed construction were still in service, during the war all-metal monoplanes with retractable landing gear and supercharged engines came to dominate, and at the very end the first jet-powered aircraft reached combat. A survey title on this theme therefore leads the reader across several generations of machinery and across the warring sides alike.
This is a publication on the history of aviation, not a kit and not modeling material. Titles of this kind tend to be useful to modelers in that they hold together what otherwise has to be hunted piece by piece: the placing of a type in its context, a comparison of machines against each other, and picture reference for the color finish.
