About product

Silicone molds - Steampunk from Green Stuff World

This is a modeling aid, not a set of finished parts. You press a shapeable modeling putty into the silicone mold, or pour a suitable casting material into it, and once it has set you get small decorative elements in the steampunk style. These are then glued onto a diorama, onto bases under figures, or onto the model itself as added detail.

Why silicone

A flexible mold can be bent and peeled back when the part is removed, so shapes come out of it that would stay stuck in a rigid mold. With busy decorative elements that is the decisive difference. Silicone also stands up well to repeated use, so you can make the same element as many times as you need and tune the whole scene to a single style.

How to work with the mold

  • Press the putty into each shape separately and scrape off the excess, so the casting does not have a thick backing layer.
  • Let the putty cure completely, and only then bend the mold and release the casting.
  • Clean the castings before gluing and trim any flash with a sharp scalpel.
  • Glue according to the material of the casting; with hard putties super glue works well.
  • Clean the mold after work so that no putty residue stays in the small recesses.

Who the mold is for

It suits builders of dioramas with a steampunk or industrial feel, players who give their figures and terrain a personal touch, and modelers who like to add details made by their own hand. The number and the sizes of the shapes are given by the manufacturer on the packaging.

Treat the first casting as a test piece, so you can tune both the consistency of the putty and the curing time.

FAQ

No. It is a mold from which you make the parts yourself, out of modeling putty or a casting material.

The manufacturer gives the number and the sizes of the shapes on the packaging.

Flexible silicone can be bent when the part is removed, so even busy shapes come out that would get stuck in a rigid mold.

Best right after use, while the putty residue has not yet cured. Dried material in the recesses degrades the crispness of later castings.
