A silicone mat measuring 600 x 400 mm, that is 60 x 40 cm, marks out an area on the bench for painting, mixing and assembling. Silicone is smooth and flexible, so spilled paint and a drop of glue do not soak into it and the benchtop underneath stays clean. The mat also serves as a settled surface on which small parts do not get lost or roll over the edge.
An area of 60 x 40 cm covers a substantial part of an ordinary bench top and takes a model, a palette and several pots of paint. The mat has to lie on a flat top, because silicone follows every unevenness beneath it faithfully. When it is not in use it can be rolled up and put away; just do not store it under heavy objects, so that no creases are left in it.
Dried paint residue can usually be peeled off the smooth silicone; otherwise a wipe with a damp cloth is enough. Do not use it in place of a cutting mat, though: a blade cuts into the soft silicone and damages it. For cutting, reach for a self-healing mat and keep the silicone one for painting and assembly. Wipe spilled thinner off the surface at once, so that it does not reach a model set down beside it.
