A hand, a face, a belt, a satchel, a horse's harness, boots – skin and tanned leather often lie right next to each other on a figure, and yet they have to be told apart by color. The set solves this task with six shades that complement one another: Tenebrous Grey, Medium Orange, Deep Brown, Leather Brown, Light Earth and Ochre.
The gray Tenebrous Grey is the darkest member of the palette and is used as a shadow that does not push the color toward purple or black. Deep Brown with Leather Brown make up the body of leather parts, and Light Earth lightens them at the folds and in the places where the leather is worn. Ochre and Medium Orange add a warm tone that suits skin as well as light untanned leather, straps and the wooden parts of equipment.
Each bottle holds 17 ml. The pigment is finely ground, so the paint does not lose the sharpness of engraved wrinkles or small fittings and takes several glazes over one another. On a figure the procedure from the darkest tone upward has proved itself: the base area, a shadow into the folds, then two or three highlights drawn over an ever smaller area. Leather parts will take a spot of gloss at the end, to set them apart from matte cloth.
The most common mistake is that both end up in the same tone and the figure loses its outline to the eye. It helps to keep the skin warmer and lighter, while shifting the leather parts toward gray and leaving them darker than seems right at first glance. A difference of two steps on the scale of brightness is enough for a hand on a belt to be recognizable at once.
