Spruce on a trunk 500 mm — a finished Model Scene model tree

This spruce is a finished tree, not a kit and not a loose material. The Czech manufacturer Model Scene makes it by hand, so every piece has its own shape of crown — two trees side by side therefore do not read as copies, which is fundamental to credible model landscape. The stated height of 500 mm makes it a pronounced, dominant element of a scene.

The spruce as a model tree

Compared with a pine the spruce has a clearly different habit: a regular conical crown, densely branched almost right down to the ground and narrowing to a point. The on-a-trunk version means that the tree stands on a firm supporting trunk that holds the shape of the crown and at the same time serves to fix it into a substrate. A height of half a meter corresponds in 1:72 scale to a tree roughly 36 meters tall, and in 1:87 to more than 40 meters — that is a genuinely mature forest giant. In larger scales such as 1:35 it represents a solid, roughly seventeen-meter tree.

How to plant the tree into a scene

The trunk is set into a pre-drilled hole in the base board and secured with glue or filler. With a tree of this height, allow for the center of gravity — fix the base properly, especially if the scene will be carried or taken to a show. Hide the transition from the trunk to the terrain with growth, turf or fallen needles; nothing gives a model tree away faster than a cleanly cut trunk rising out of a bare surface. The needles can be toned gently if needed, but in most scenes it is not necessary.
