Tracks are the most heavily worked and the hardest painted part of a model of an armored vehicle. A lot of them is on show, the ground and the running gear itself touch them, and a uniform dark coat turns them into a rubber strip. The Lifecolor set is built on them in particular: it offers shades for the base tone of the links and for the marks that service leaves on them.
A track never has one color. The surfaces the machine rolls over are smoothed by friction all the way to a metallic sheen, and so are the sprocket teeth and the guide horns. The inside of the links and the places covered by mud, by contrast, corrode to a brownish orange. In between lies a deposit of dust and soil from the region the vehicle drove through, and that holds above all in the openings of the links and around the pins. A convincing track therefore arises by layering: a dark base, corrosion, dust and finally the polished edges.
Wash and degrease the tracks before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold on a smooth surface. Paint them separately from the hull while they are still reachable from both sides. Lay on the dark base, patchy corrosion tones over it and only then the dust, always in thin layers and after the previous one has dried. Leave the contact surfaces and the teeth for the end and bring them out only after the model is seated on its base, so that the sheen stays only where movement would have caused it.
For builders of tracked equipment who are bothered by tracks getting lost on a finished model. The model, the glue and the thinner are not included, unless stated otherwise.
