About product

Model Scene Steppe spring

Finished scenery growth imitating steppe, that is a dry grassy plain with scattered tufts and gaps of bare earth. The spring version means a predominance of green and olive shades, that is the state shortly after the vegetation has come up, before the sun dries it out. The material is simply laid down and glued.

What the vegetation looks like and where it fits

Steppe differs from a meadow in that the growth is not continuous: earth and dust show through between the tufts, which is a great advantage for a model scene, because connecting it to the surrounding terrain is easier and more credible. It comes into its own on dioramas from Eastern and Southeastern Europe, from dry plateaus and treeless plains, at field tracks and anywhere it is meant to show that the soil is poor.

Usage tips

Lay the growth only onto finished, painted and dusted terrain. Try the intended spot dry first, tear or cut the piece to an irregular shape as needed, since a sharp straight edge does not arise in nature. It is glued with PVA wood glue, and a drop of cyanoacrylate will serve for a firm hold on a hard substrate. Hide the transition between the growth and the surrounding soil with a sprinkled fine scatter, grit or pigment, so that the growth does not look like a glued-on carpet. You can match the coloring with a light overspray of heavily thinned paint from above or by dusting with pigment, always only very lightly and once dry. With steppe, deliberately leave part of the area without growth and work the gaps in with a fine scatter and dust pigment, so that the transition between the tufts and the earth looks natural.

Who it is for

  • dioramas from dry plateaus and the Eastern Front
  • scenes where bare earth is meant to show between the tufts
  • modelers building vignettes and terrain bases
  • combining with a dusty track and a dusty vehicle

This is a scenery accessory for building a diorama, not a model kit. The base, the glue and any further materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
