The widest strips of the range on offer: five millimeters of yellow masking paper with a self-adhesive layer.
Responsibility details are not available.
A five-millimeter band closes the range on offer at the top. In 1:48 scale it works out at twenty-four centimeters of real width, in 1:35 scale at seventeen and a half: that is, roughly the dimension of a wide recognition stripe or of a band of fuselage that on large machines was set apart as a whole. It is also used as a quick way of defining a boundary on two-color camouflage with a hard division, where the dividing line is to be absolutely straight.
A hard division is merciless. The slightest waviness of an edge is visible on a finished model, because the eye reads a straight line more easily than any other shape. With wide bands, therefore, it pays to establish two reference points at the ends first, stretch the strip loosely above the surface between them and only lower it once you have checked. Anyone who lays a band gradually from one end usually ends up with a curve that they learn about only after spraying.
The varnish under the mask should be cured, not merely dry to the touch; with solvent-based paints the difference between one day and a few hours matters a great deal. Spray perpendicular to the edge, and rather in two passes than in one heavy coat. The remaining area can be covered with anything that holds: paper, film or cardboard; the accuracy is taken care of by the edge of the strip alone.
Compared with film, a paper carrier has one practical advantage: it can be torn across with the fingers and the edge stays acceptably straight. When you need a piece quickly and have no knife at hand, it is enough to fold the strip and tear it over a fingernail. That will not do for long runs; for short ones it will.
