ABS strip 0.50 x 0.50 x 350 mm, 10 pieces

A rod of ABS with a square section of 0.50 x 0.50 mm and a length of 350 mm, 10 pieces per package. The dimensions in the name are millimeters, not a scale. A square section means that the rod looks the same from all four sides, so when gluing you do not have to watch which face you lay against the surface.

Where a square section helps

A half-millimeter strip is the typical material for small vertical and horizontal elements: railing posts, grab handles, hatch frames, spacers under parts, gap fillers and guide rails along which further elements are laid. It also serves as a hidden stiffener inside a shell, where it is not seen but holds the shape. Against a flat strip it has the advantage of not twisting while being glued.

Working with the material

• ABS is tougher than polystyrene and cracks less readily, but ordinary liquid cement for polystyrene holds on it more weakly.
• Use a glue suited to ABS, a modeling solvent cement or super glue; test the strength of the joint on an offcut.
• Cut with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, then level the end with fine abrasive paper.
• Measure repeated parts against a template, so that they come out the same to a tenth of a millimeter.
• The material sands and drills well, but drill small holes at low speed so that the plastic does not melt.

For modelers who add detail themselves, for builders of dioramas, mockups and railway scenes, and for anyone repairing or replacing small parts lost from a kit. Ten pieces of 350 mm last a long time even on a larger job.
