The three-color camouflage of the closing stage of the war

From February 1943 German vehicles left the production halls in a dark yellow finish and received their additional colors only at the unit. The result therefore never looked the same twice: the patches were sprayed, applied with a rag or with a brush, and their shape depended on what the crew had at hand. It is precisely this lack of uniformity that the set makes it possible to imitate.

Yellow twice, green twice, brown twice

The base is formed by two variants of dark yellow from late production, because the shade shifted over time and the deliveries differed from batch to batch. With them go an olive and a lighter greenish color and then two browns, a richer red-brown and a darker chocolate. The modeler can thus choose whether to have a sharper or a more muted contrast of patches.

What the set is built for

It matches the late production series of German assault guns on the chassis of the medium tank, that is machines from the last two years of the war. It can also be used on other equipment of the same period, because the standards were common to the whole of production.

Advice on application

It pays to lay the yellow down overall first and let it dry completely, and only then do the patches. A soft edge is created by low pressure and a greater distance of the nozzle, a hard one by masking. Anyone who wants to capture the work of the crew can apply the patches with a piece of sponge. The anti-magnetic coating against magnetic mines that these vehicles carried is dealt with by putty before painting, not with paint. The rest of the work is then done by picking out the edges and dusting the running gear.
