With dark shades it is always the same battle on ship and aircraft models. On a color chart they look splendid, but as soon as they cover a large continuous area they swallow both shadow and light and the model is visually flattened. Modelers deal with it by deliberately breaking a dark area up: they lighten the centers of panels, leave the edges somewhat darker and fine-tune the area only once it is dry. On large hulls and decks it also pays to paint in parts and to keep putting the model down and checking it from a distance, because up close the loss of detail is hard to spot.
