About product

Grumman FM-1 Wildcat gun bays 1:48, a resin add-on from Eduard

The set deals with the space of the wing gun bays of the Grumman FM-1 Wildcat fighter in 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft model and not a whole wing either: it is a separate add-on with which the simplified or entirely missing insides of the bays in an injection-molded kit are replaced. The parts are made by 3D printing in resin, so they hold sharp edges and fine shapes that cannot get into a metal mold. Eduard is a Czech manufacturer from Obrnice near Most and resin add-ons are among its most widespread production.

What the set changes on a finished model

An open gun bay is one of the few ways to show the internal structure on a closed low-wing aircraft. The model gains a detail on show that will hold attention even on a display table, and at the same time it opens up room for a color contrast between the inner color of the bay and the outer coat of the wing.

The real subject

The FM-1 designation was carried by the Wildcat that was not built at Grumman but under license at Eastern Aircraft, a division of General Motors. Grumman needed to free production capacity for the new Hellcat, and so it handed the production of the proven carrier fighter over to a partner. The FM-1 was based on the F4F-4 version, but in armament it carried only four heavy machine guns instead of six, with a greater supply of ammunition in exchange. It served mainly from the decks of escort carriers, where a small size and a robust undercarriage paid off more than maximum speed.

Building and painting tips

First rinse the resin parts with lukewarm water and a drop of detergent and let them dry, so that the paint holds. Separate them from the support structures with a modeling saw or a cutter, never break them. Sanding is best done wet and with respiratory protection. They are bonded with super glue; ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on resin. Before painting apply primer, and the inside of the bays can then simply be emphasized with a dark wash and a light dry brush.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the Wildcat with an open gun bay
  • more experienced builders who have worked with resin before
  • competition and display builds, where detail decides
  • owners of the FM-1 kit in 1:48 scale

It is an add-on to a kit, not a model in its own right. Please check compatibility with a particular kit against the manufacturer's data.

FAQ

It is not. It is an add-on set that deals with the space of the wing gun bays on a model of the FM-1 Wildcat in 1:48 scale. You need to have the aircraft itself from a plastic kit.

Cyanoacrylate super glue, or two-part epoxy. The classic cement for polystyrene does not dissolve resin, so the joint would not hold.

Yes. Rinse them with lukewarm water and detergent, let them dry and apply primer. Without that the paint holds badly on the smooth surface.

The FM-1 was built under license by Eastern Aircraft, a division of General Motors. It was based on the F4F-4, but it carried four heavy machine guns instead of six and more ammunition with them.
