Crates, boxes, pallets and barrels are the most common wooden element on a diorama, and at the same time the one modelers get wrong most often. A dark brown turns them into old furniture, an orange into a plastic toy. Gelbbraun Matt RAL 8020 from the Italian maker Lifecolor is a yellow-brown shade with a matte surface that sits exactly in the band of the soft coniferous timber shipping containers were made from. The manufacturer gives both the RAL designation and the gloss level in the name.
On engraved plank grain a yellow-brown behaves differently than dark shades: it lets the texture come through instead of drowning it. It therefore suits places where the wood is meant to be legible, on the sides of open crates, on the planks of a cargo bed, on planed battens. If you want to add years to the wood, there is no need to change the shade; it is enough to leave it as the base and keep the depth of the joints darker.
Beyond wood: a matte yellow-brown tone also serves on dry rammed earth, on clay render and on mud brick, where it is the link between the terrain and the buildings of a scene.
For builders of supply, workshop and village dioramas, where the most wood comes together, and for modelers whose crates in a scene come out too dark.
