Stone is the material for which modelers most often reach for a pure gray, and then the scene looks as though it were cast in concrete. Real masonry, paving and a rock outcrop always have an admixture of sand and soil from their surroundings in their gray. Sandgrau Matt RAL 7027 from the Italian maker Lifecolor is a matte sandy gray shade exactly in that band. The manufacturer gives both the RAL designation and the gloss level in the name.
Cast or carved stone always has pronounced texture, and that decides the result more than the shade itself. On a coarse surface a sandy gray settles on the raised parts and the edges of the individual blocks, while the joints and cracks hold the darkness. A stone wall thus stops being a surface and starts having individual stones. On paving it pays to vary the shade slightly from stone to stone so that the surface does not look like a printed texture.
Builders of urban and village dioramas with large areas of masonry, and modelers whose stone elements in a scene come out too coldly gray.
